Erding – the Kogler family has left their mark on the district.

Churches in many places bear witness to their craftsmanship.

The best known is Hans Kogler (1642-1702).

In our series about street names in Erding, we are therefore visiting the Hans-Kogler-Weg today.

The path leads rather inconspicuously along the large parking lot at Mühlgraben and past the school at Lodererplatz from Landshuter Straße to Straße St. Paul.

The fact that the path ends at the cemetery church of the same name gives an indication of Hans Kogler's profession.

He belonged to a family of master bricklayers who came from Schliersee and after the Thirty Years' War from 1649 to 1729 provided the Erdinger city master builders.

Hans Kogler took over the job from his father Kaspar, after which his son Anton took over.

The Kogler dynasty built numerous baroque churches in the district.

The most famous of these is certainly the Heilig Blut pilgrimage church, which was built in 1675.

26 years later a fountain chapel was added to the church.

Due to cracks in the masonry, the pilgrimage church has been closed since the end of 2015 and is no longer accessible to visitors.

The works of Hans Kogler also include the parish churches of St. Martin in Langengeisling, St. Georg in Eitting, St. Georg in Finsing and the cemetery church of St. Paul in Erding, which is also known as the church of Gottesacker.

In addition, the busy city master builder has baroque-styled various churches - such as St. Georg in Riding and most likely the pilgrimage church of Maria Thalheim.

The castle chapel of St. Magdalena at Aufhausen Castle is also attributed to Hans Kogler.

Today it is often used for stylish weddings.

Master mason Hans Kogler was born in Schliersee in February 1642 and died in 1702 at the age of 60.

After his death, his son Anton took over the office of city master builder and held it for another 27 years.

Anton Kogler was born in Erdinger.

Around 30 churches were built, expanded or rebuilt by him.

One of his most important works is the parish church of the Annunciation in Altenerding, which was completed in 1724.

The pilgrimage church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Tading is also attributed to Anton Kogler, as is the parish church of St. Emmeram in Moosinning and the Wartenberg parish church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary.

After Anton Kogler died in 1729, his widow married the church architect Johann Baptist Lethner.

He also gave the district numerous baroque churches.

And Lethner also has a street dedicated to him in Erding, where the adult education center is located today.

The master mason's alley in the city center most likely also owes its name to the Kogler dynasty.

Hans Kogler is said to have lived in what later became the Strobl house (today Gruber's laundry house).

The wooden entrance door, which was later moved to the right of the "Kramer House", is still preserved and supports the assumption.

"The decorations on the door symbolically refer to a master mason," explains art historian Heike Kronseder.

Thanks to the creativity of the Kogler dynasty of master builders, the Erdinger Land has an enormous density of baroque church buildings, which still attracts numerous believers today.

Further information about the churches and the Kogler family is available on the Internet on the websites of the parish associations of St. Johannes and Altenerding, in the anniversary publication "Stadt Erding Chronik - Bilderbogen - Dokument" and from the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation.
