The Novavax vaccine has been approved by the STIKO.

The head of the Freising vaccination center answers important questions about the new vaccine.

Freising

– It was announced for a long time, now it is approved: On Thursday, the Standing Vaccination Commission (STIKO) spoke out in favor of the use of the Corona vaccine Novavax for people aged 18 and over.

Torsten Koch, head of the Freising vaccination center, explains what effects the approval has on vaccination in the district and why the STIKO recommendation makes him optimistic.

Mr. Koch, what does the Novavax approval mean for the vaccination campaign?

Every vaccine, no matter in what form, brings the vaccination campaign a step further, or the vaccination rate a bit higher.

My gut feeling says that in our district, 700 to 1000 people who have been cautious up to now will be vaccinated with it.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

We are currently running a survey in the medical practices, senior citizens' facilities and in the clinic, how many employees would like to be vaccinated with Novavax.

The background is that according to the state government, those who would be affected by the institution-related vaccination obligation should be given priority.

I think there are still some people who aren't opposed to vaccination per se, but are just reluctant to mRNA vaccines.

In contrast to the mRNA vaccines, the Novavax vaccine is referred to as an "inactivated vaccine".

What does that mean?

The difference is, so to speak, the system, the structure on which the vaccines are based.

Dead vaccines have been around for decades.

They contain dead pathogens or just parts of them.

The immune system reacts to these by forming antibodies.

mRNA vaccines, on the other hand, are new.

They ensure that the body produces small parts of the pathogen itself because they contain a kind of blueprint for this.

With this information, the body can also develop immune protection.

When should the new vaccine be vaccinated in the Freising district?

Federal Health Minister Lauterbach has announced that the federal government will receive the vaccine in calendar week eight, i.e. from February 21st.

Then it is distributed to the countries that deliver it to the vaccination centers.

If everything goes according to plan, I assume that we will get the vaccine on Shrove Monday.

Anyone who registers for a vaccination can still choose whether they want Biontech or Moderna at the vaccination center in Freising and will then receive appropriate appointment suggestions.

As soon as we are supplied with Novavax, you can select this one in addition to the other two vaccines.

I assume that there will be two, three, four days when we will only vaccinate Novavax.
