A senior State Department official said tonight (Saturday) that it had decided to lift the sanctions imposed on Iran's nuclear program, the AFP news agency reported.

The source claimed that the decision was part of a necessary technical move to return to the 2015 nuclear deal. .

Without waiving the sanctions it is impossible to hold detailed technical discussions with other parties regarding the removal of reservoirs and other activities, the senior State Department official said.

The renewal of the waiver came when talks to restore the joint action plan in 2015 were in advanced stages, with former US President Donald Trump unilaterally resigning from it in 2019.

After the US election, President Joe Biden returned to the agreement but Iran managed to come close to creating a sufficient amount of fissile material for nuclear weapons.

Talks in Vienna include Iran, the United States, Britain, China, France, Germany and Russia and are at a key stage where the parties need to make "critical political decisions," a senior U.S. official said a week ago.

Another source in the United States has argued that the technical discussions on the waiver of sanctions have been necessary in recent weeks as part of talks on a superpower agreement on the Iranian nuclear program.

If the agreement is not finalized, the waiver of sanctions is important for the existence of discussions on nuclear non-proliferation, "an issue that interests the whole world," the US State Department official said.

The official insisted that the move was not "part of the consideration", as the partners in talks on a superpower agreement on Iran's nuclear program are awaiting Iran's response on key issues.

But a senior U.S. administration official who briefed foreign reporters on the talks last week said time was running out, urging Tehran to make important decisions.

"I think we are at a point where some of the most critical political decisions must be made by all parties," the official said.

In addition, the official suggested that there be direct talks between Washington and Tehran to focus on the most difficult issues separating the parties.

"If our goal is to reach understandings quickly. The optimal way to do that, in any negotiation, is for the parties who have the most at stake to meet directly," the senior State Department official said.
