China reiterated its call for real multilateralism in the international system on the basis of the United Nations Charter, affirming its commitment to upholding the fundamental role of the United Nations in international affairs.
And the Chinese Xinhua news agency quoted Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi as saying during his meeting with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in Beijing that "China has always called for the practice of true pluralism and believes that there is only one system in the world, which is the international system, with the United Nations at its heart, and there is one group." Wang noted that Guterres' attendance at the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics reflects the United Nations' support for this sporting event, stressing that his country will fulfill its earnest promise to provide a smooth, safe and wonderful Olympic Games to the world.
For his part, Guterres appreciated China's long-term vital role in supporting multilateralism, participating in peacekeeping and promoting development, saying that "the United Nations supports the global development initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping and is ready to cooperate with China in this regard."
