Stockholm-Sana

A number of environmental activists, led by Greta Thunberg, demonstrated against the exploitation of an iron mine in northern Sweden because of the damage it causes to the climate and the environment.

"We believe that the climate, the environment, clean air and water, reindeer husbandry, the rights of indigenous peoples and the future of humanity should all be prioritized over the short-term profit of a business," Thunberg was quoted by AFP as saying in a video clip sent to the press.

The activist behind the launch of the climate movement Fridays for Future believes that the Swedish government should stop colonizing Sami lands.

It is noteworthy that the Sami movement, whose number is estimated at about 100,000 people, including 20,000 to 40,000 in Sweden, operates the Galuk-Kalack iron mine located near the sub-Arctic town of Yokmok, because this will hinder reindeer husbandry and thus disrupt hunting and fishing in addition to distorting the local environment.

The Sami, the only indigenous people in Europe, make their strength by breeding reindeer, which live in vast areas in the Arctic, northern Finland, Norway and Sweden, as well as the Russian Kola Peninsula.
