A scientist loses his job for an offensive message against a Latino meteorologist but continues to disrespect and mock on Twitter

2022-02-07T20:26:56.185Z

"To be frank, those comments aren't even the worst thing I've ever heard, growing up undocumented my family always told me to ignore it and get on with my life," explains the attacked expert.

An offensive message published on the social network Twitter against a Hispanic meteorologist has cost the job of a scientist specializing in atmospheric physics at a climate research center in Washington.

Timothy J. Dunkerton responded on February 2 to a post by a Latino meteorologist who is working with other bilingual colleagues to improve emergency communications for the Hispanic community in the United States.

The meteorologist, Joseph E. Trujillo Falcón, was advertising his new position as a weather and climate presenter for a podcast in Spanish, and Dunkerton's response was: “

When are you going to integrate in the United States?

”.

The xenophobic comment directed against the meteorologist for speaking in Spanish sparked dozens of reactions, including that of the research center where Dunkerton works, NorthWest Research Associates (NWRA), which fired him last Friday, February 4.

The institution responded that its board of directors and scientists considered the tweet "

unjustified and surprisingly offensive

", according to The Washington Post newspaper.

The meteorologist, originally from Peru, thanked the support received by his family and the community and said he was not surprised by the scientist's attack.

"To be honest,

the comment is not even among the worst things I've ever heard in my life

," the immigrant said.

“Growing up undocumented, my family always advised me to 'ignore', 'ignore it', 'move on,'” he said regarding the attacks because of his origin.

But Trujillo Falcón remarked that his reaction in his favor from his colleagues showed him that this type of action "should not be tolerated at all."

An ethics investigation against you

Dunkerton also faces possible sanctions from the American Meteorological Society (AMS), of which he is a distinguished member, which is investigating what happened under its Code of Ethics and Conduct.

Aaron Piña, former chair of an AMS diversity committee, was one of the scientists who reacted with dismay to Dunkerton's "vile comment."

Dunkerton's publication reignited a long-standing debate in the scientific community around the importance of fostering diversity and the inclusion of women and minorities.

AMS has held workshops on this and in the past year, and has published formal procedures for dealing with complaints of harassment, sexual or otherwise.

The chain of reactions did not intimidate the scientist, who

refuted the criticism and made fun of it

He even told his employer to make sure he “responds in English” when asked by a meteorologist what actions would be taken.

A severe storm scientist from Poland who works at the National Severe Storms Laboratory in Norman, Oklahoma, suggested that Dunkerton apologize and "realize that his comments are hurting people."

Please stay here,” he noted.

Several people flagged Dunkerton's comments on Twitter as inappropriate.

The platform's investigation "found that this account violated Twitter's rules" against abuse and harassment.

However, Dunkerton was still active on Twitter at the time of this article's publication, cheekily bragging about it: "Sorry, I'm here."
