Dangerous attack with knife, candlestick and hammer in Hamburg: A man seriously injured his partner in madness.

The verdict corresponded to the demands of all those involved in the process.

The district court of Hamburg ordered the accommodation on Monday.

In fact, the mentally ill suspect believed that his partner had killed his family and that he had to protect himself from her attack, said presiding judge Jessica Koerner in the verdict.

It is attempted manslaughter and dangerous bodily harm in the state of incapacity.

The verdict is already final because those involved in the process waived their right to appeal while still in the courtroom.

The man attacked and seriously injured his 46-year-old partner in August 2021 on the loggia of their shared apartment in the Altona district.

That came as a complete surprise to her, the woman testified as a witness in court.

He is very sorry, said the accused in the so-called last word, according to a translator.

He loves the 46-year-old.

"It only happened because I wasn't 100% myself."

According to the documents available to the court, the man comes from Guinea-Bissau in West Africa and claims to have Portuguese nationality.

There was confusion at the beginning of the trial about the age of the accused.

At first it was said that he was 21 years old.

He himself stated in the proceedings that he was 23 years old.

Police officers alerted by neighbors had found the seriously injured partner.

Among other things, the woman had a stab wound below the larynx, at least two fractures in the skull and a broken foot.

She is still suffering from the consequences of the attack today - for example, the representative of the co-plaintiff reported in her plea that she had problems concentrating and finding words.

According to the information, the couple met at night in a Hamburg club in 2017.

Shortly thereafter, the man moved into his partner's apartment, where she lived with her son and his girlfriend.

Koerner said that living together was difficult and full of conflict right from the start.

The woman was no longer allowed to meet with friends without permission.

The couple rarely left the house and often argued.

A good three months before the crime, the accused had become more and more mentally conspicuous.

Suddenly I prayed very often, smoked pot, hardly slept, wore several jackets on top of each other in the apartment and wore a bicycle lock around my stomach, which was supposed to give him security.

According to the judge, just as the woman was looking for help for her partner on the Internet, he grabbed the steak knife and stabbed until the knife broke.

He then attacked the bleeding woman with a candlestick and a hammer.

"There was a potential danger to life," emphasized Koerner.

The suspect is dangerous to the public.

But in the psychiatric hospital he could now get help.

When she finally wished him all the best for the future, the man thanked her several times.
