Nearly 20 people were left isolated after a piece of ice from Lake Erie they were on broke away from the Ohio coast on Sunday afternoon.

Fortunately, rescuers were later able to return them to dry land without injury, authorities said.

A Detroit-based Coast Guard helicopter was flying over the area of Sandusky Island, a municipality in Ohio, when crew members noticed the piece of ice drifting before 1:00 p.m., reported in a Coast Guard statement.

Some of the people on the pack ice were using snowmobiles in an attempt to find a way to land, the Coast Guard said.

The MH-65 Dolphin helicopter that was flying over the island went into action and seven people were brought aboard, according to the military branch.

At the same time, two snowboats, one from the nearby Marblehead Coast Guard Station and one piloted by a Good Samaritan, picked up the others.

The Coast Guard initially estimated there were 20 people trapped, but declared the mission accomplished after all 18 were rescued.

The Good Samaritan boat pulled seven out of the pack ice, while the Coast Guard boat rescued four.

Sunny skies followed the bitter cold overnight as more ice packs formed on Sunday.

The clear weather could have been unsettling for ice and at the same time drawing people outdoors.

Authorities issued warnings Saturday about instability and fluctuating conditions at the top of Lake Erie.

On Saturday, the National Weather Service office serving Cleveland recommended enjoying the outdoors elsewhere.

“You are urged to stay off the ice on Lake Erie as there is a potential for the ice to move away from the shore

,” the NWS tweeted.

“Dangerous conditions could develop causing people to become trapped in the ice.”

Federal forecasters noted on Saturday that parts of the lake were warmer than land.

Also, wind gusts of up to 25 miles per hour and cracks in the surface did not bode well for fun on the ice, the weather service said.

In fact, they said the northward drift over Lake Erie meant ice floes could end up in Canada.

“There is no such thing as safe ice, but people can mitigate their risks,” Detroit-based Coast Guard Lt. Jeremiah Schiessel said late in the afternoon.

"Great Lakes ice is unpredictable and conditions can change quickly."

The ice sheet broke off while a group of people were using snowmobiles, on top of the frozen lake, the Coast Guard said in a series of statements on Twitter and by email.

The Good Samaritan was not identified.

The Coast Guard used the occasion to remind outdoor enthusiasts to

dress for the temperature of the water, not the temperature of the air,

when on ice or in the water, wear a life jacket, keep reliable communication devices and tell someone inland where you are going to be and when.

This time, none of that would have made much of a difference.

But since the dangers of the ice on the Great Lakes can turn a day of fun into an alert, rescuers were lucky to have emergency medical services.

The help was not needed.
