(CNN Spanish) --
Guatemalan authorities, as a result of joint work with United States security agencies, arrested 10 Guatemalans and are looking for another five in connection with a human trafficking case that led to the murder of 19 migrants —mostly from Guatemala— in Camargo, Tamaulipas state, Mexico, in January 2021.
The details of the operation that led to the arrests were revealed this Monday in simultaneous statements by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) and the Guatemalan Public Ministry.
In addition to ICE and the Guatemalan Prosecutor's Office, two other units from the US Department of Homeland Security and the Guatemalan National Civil Police (PNC) participated in the investigation.
According to communications from ICE and the Guatemalan Prosecutor's Office, on January 28, the Army and a PNC special operations group executed 19 search warrants and arrested 10 individuals for violations of laws related to human trafficking.
The detainees are accused of a series of crimes, including illegal human trafficking, money laundering, falsifying evidence and obstruction of justice.
Mexican authorities also collaborated in the investigation.
The investigations focused on a human trafficking organization known in Guatemala as "Los Coronado", which ICE identifies as "Coronado/Miranda", which would operate from the department of San Marcos, in Guatemala.
The ICE bulletin adds that the seizures included approximately $203,000 (in different currencies), 5 vehicles, 61 illegal gaming machines, a firearm, ammunition, and various electronic devices.
