Hundreds of mourners gathered last night (Monday) in northern Morocco to pay their last respects to Ryan Awram, who died on Saturday after efforts to rescue him from a well that fascinated the country and the world.

Five-year-old Ryan fell into a well in the village of Tamrat in Shepashwan province on Tuesday, and his body was rescued four days later after rescue workers dug a rib from a nearby hill to reach the bottom of the well, which is 32 meters deep.

Participants in the funeral ceremony climbed the mountainous, unpaved road leading to the village cemetery, waiting for hours for the arrival of Ryan’s coffin, which was wrapped in a green flag alongside verses from the Koran.

"I'm over 50 and have never seen so many people at a funeral. Ryan is the son of us all," said one resident.

Some of the participants in the funeral were unable to reach the cemetery and prayer complex due to the high density, and two large tents were erected in front of Ryan's family home.

"Ryan's death renewed his belief in humanity when people in different languages and from different countries expressed solidarity," said another resident.

The obituaries for Ryan came from King Mohammed VI of Morocco, Pope Francis, French President Emmanuel Macron, the ruler of Dubai and other leaders.

On Sunday, the players of the Egyptian and Senegal national teams stood for a minute of silence before the opening of the Champions League final in Cameroon.

Rescuers were constantly working to reach Ryan, with the high risk that the excavation operations would lead to landslides.

"I'm very sad. We spared no effort to get the child alive. We dug around the clock, five days, which could have taken weeks," volunteer digger Ali Sahrawi told reporters at the funeral.
