Come on!

Drivers were stuck in traffic jams in Munich almost as often in 2021 as in 2019. So everything is back to how it was before Corona: This is the conclusion reached by mapping specialist TomTom in its new index.

Munich – The traffic jam is back: Last year, Munich drivers were almost as often bumper to bumper as before Corona *.

This is the result of the "TomTom Traffic Index" for the year 2021. According to this, the level of traffic jams was four percentage points below the value for 2019, but two percentage points above the value for 2020. Motorists who arrived in Munich between April 6 and and 9 a.m. were on the road for 98 hours in 2021.

You can clearly see that there are fewer people in the home office again, the time of lockdowns is over...

The toughest of the past year was Tuesday, June 29th.

On that day, the German football fans cursed because the DFB-Elf* flew out at the EM against England* - and the Munich drivers also cursed about the standstill on the streets.

The traffic jam level on a daily average at 49 percent.

In other words, the travel time has increased by almost half.

Reason: a violent storm.

Heavy rain and gusty winds had caused the fire brigade to deploy 75 times.

Cellars were full - and especially underpasses...

“TomTom Traffic Index”: This is the longest day of the week in Munich that people are stuck in traffic jams

For its 2021 Index, mapping specialist TomTom evaluated data from 404 cities and 58 countries.

In Germany, 27 cities were examined, including Munich*.

And here the data shows recognizable fluctuations in the level of congestion over the course of the year: if the time lost at the beginning of the year was still well below the level of 2019, the values from June 2021 have almost reached this level again.

In general, TomTom 2021 determined the greatest loss of time during the week for the time on Thursday evenings between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.

The annual average level of congestion here is 52 percent.

Basically, there is an increased risk of traffic jams during rush hour, i.e. Monday to Friday between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. and Monday to Wednesday between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.;

Thursday from 3pm to 7pm and Friday from 1pm to 6pm.

Who is responsible for the traffic jam in Munich?

"TomTom Traffic Index" gives a clear answer

In addition, TomTom found that both before and during the pandemic, nearly three-quarters of all journeys recorded were urban.

A constant 21 percent of the trips came from the districts around Munich.

Most commuters come from the districts of Fürstenfeldbruck, Ebersberg and Freising as well as from Germering, Dachau and Unterhaching.

Only a little more than five percent started from further away.
