Following recent reports of Israeli police using unlawful and unlawful espionage measures to monitor the country's citizens - a new bill, common to coalition and opposition factions, proposes that in special cases a special prosecutor be appointed who will be given extensive powers.
Knesset members Shlomo Krei (Likud) and Musi Raz (Meretz) submitted the bill together, which, as stated, will allow the appointment of a special prosecutor by the Knesset's State Audit Committee at the request of the government or at the initiative of the committee itself.
The special prosecutor will have investigative powers similar to a state commission of inquiry and will also have investigative and prosecuting powers, all in isolation from law enforcement systems.
MK Musi Raz referred to the bill he submitted, and told "Israel Today" that "the NSO upheaval makes it clear to us: the police cannot investigate themselves.
The possibility of appointing a special prosecutor is the way to produce a body that will investigate in the most comprehensive, transparent and objective way possible the affair.
Those responsible - at the professional and political level - must be held accountable for this omission. "

MK Shlomo Karai told Israel Today that "the serious espionage affair that was published recently requires us to conduct an independent, in-depth and comprehensive investigation, both for the substance of the matter and for restoring public trust - 'and you were clean from' and from Israel '."
