Johnson signals an end to all restrictions in the UK

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has signaled an early end to all coronavirus restrictions in England, including the legal requirement of self-isolation for positive Covid-19 cases.

The prime minister said he would present the government's strategy "for living with covid" when Parliament returns from a short recess on February 21.

"Provided the current encouraging data trends hold, I hope we can end the latest national restrictions -- including the legal requirement to self-isolate if you test positive -- a month sooner," Johnson said.

The obligation to self-isolate for those who test positive for coronavirus currently expires on March 24.

Under current regulations in England, people have to self-isolate if they are contacted by NHS contact tracers and must provide their addresses and the names of people in their household.

On Tuesday, the UK recorded 66,183 new coronavirus cases and 314 deaths in the 28 days following a positive test, according to the latest government data.

CDC Director Says It's Too Soon to Change Mask Guide

The head of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defends the agency's mask-wearing guidelines and stressed on Tuesday that now is not the time to change the recommendations or relax the restrictions intended to prevent covid-19.

The CDC "still recommends that all schools encourage students to wear well-fitting masks consistently and indoors. And that's consistent with our guidance that also recommends people cover up in indoor public settings in transmission areas." high or substantial," CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said in a radio interview with WYPR's Tom Hall on Tuesday's edition of "Midday."

"Right now, we still have about 290,000 cases every day, and our hospitalization rates are now higher than they were even at the peak of our delta variant surge," Walensky said.

“So at this time, as we look ahead and plan, and we will continue to evaluate and follow the science, our recommendations are consistent with encouraging students to wear well-fitting masks.”
