compromise

" on timelines for a return of civilians to power.

The Ministry of Territorial Administration said in a statement that a "

dialogue group

" had met on January 31 at ministerial level.

This group aims “

to bring positions closer together and to seek compromises

,” he says.

It is made up of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union, the United Nations and a number of countries, including Ghana, which holds the presidency of ECOWAS. , Senegal, which exercises that of the AU, or even Mauritania, neighboring Mali.

The junta, which came to power by a putsch in August 2020 and reinforced by a second coup in May 2021, has been in the midst of a showdown with ECOWAS, supported by the African Union and part of the international community, since she went back on her initial commitment to organize elections in February 2022 which would have brought civilians back to the head of the country.

She said she intended to maintain it for up to five more years, citing the need for deep reforms to restore stability in a country in turmoil since the outbreak of independence and jihadist insurgencies in 2012.

Economic sanctions

ECOWAS and the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) took on January 9 a battery of vigorous economic and diplomatic sanctions.

The government installed by the military has since hammered out a discourse of resistance in the name of national sovereignty.

He and ECOWAS, however, said they were open to dialogue.
