In North Rhine-Westphalia, the number of residential units approved for public funding fell sharply in the flood disaster year 2021.

With around 957 million euros, 7319 residential units were publicly funded, said Minister of Construction Ina Scharrenbach (CDU) on Thursday in Düsseldorf.

In 2020 there were still around 8600 residential units.

However, Scharrenbach pointed out that the promotion of another 1,630 residential units with 142 million euros could not be completed.

Düsseldorf - These projects are to be implemented in the current year.

Scharrenbach described the number of residential units included in public funding as “significantly too few”.

However, 2021 was a real “disaster year” for NRW with Corona and the flood.

There was a lack of planning capacity because architects and engineers were particularly in demand due to the flood.

Building permits were not issued in time and there are also problems in filling the responsible authorities in the municipalities.

As of 2020, there were a good 515,000 publicly funded apartments in NRW, of which 452,000 were rental apartments.

Scharrenbach said the decline in price-restricted rental apartments had weakened in recent years.

While the stock fell by an average of around 3.8 percent every year between 2005 and 2015, the decline from 2018 to 2019 was almost slowed down and in 2020 it was still around one percent.

In Cologne and Düsseldorf, the stock of price-restricted rental apartments even grew slightly in 2020.
