Emma Coronel, the wife of Joaquín
El Chapo
Guzmán, will be released in September 2023, after her prison sentence for criminal conspiracy has been reduced from 36 to 31 months.
The Bureau of Prisons also reported that Coronel, 32, could be released earlier if he shows good behavior and participates in rehabilitation programs.
What remains unknown is the prison in which she is being held, information that, as with other convicted drug traffickers, is confidential for security reasons except in the case of Guzmán himself, who will spend the rest of his life in a prison in Colorado.

Coronel was sentenced in November of last year to three years in prison, one less than what the Prosecutor's Office required, for having conspired with her husband in the criminal activities of the Sinaloa cartel.
To that was added a sentence of five years of probation and the payment of a 1.5 million dollar penalty.

Coronel pleaded guilty in June to three counts of helping her husband run his criminal empire: conspiracy to traffic cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana;
conspiracy to launder money;
and transactions related to drug trafficking.
She has been in prison since she was arrested in February of this year at Dulles Airport in Virginia.
In January, Mexican journalist Anabel Hernández published a book,
Emma and the other narco ladies
, in which she claims that Coronel is not legally married to
El Chapo
.
The book focuses on the role that women play in criminal organizations in Mexico and focuses on the life of Emma Coronel, who was Chapo's wife since 2007 "under divine law".
“On July 2, 2007, when Emma turned 18, the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel married her;
not under the
law of man
because he was still legally married to Alejandrina, his first wife, from whom he had not divorced until 2021;
but yes under
divine law
”, he clarifies in a section of the text.
