Ottawa in a state of emergency: What began two weeks ago as a protest by truck drivers against compulsory vaccination has now expanded into a general settlement with the Trudeau government.

Right-wing extremists are said to mingle with people again and again, and Nazi symbols have also been spotted in some cases.

Many of the demonstrators are determined not to leave until the country's corona requirements are lifted.

“It feels like we're being patronized from all directions.

We just want our freedom.«

"I do not go anywhere.

I made a few calls and reorganized my life.

Me, and many men and some women here, we are determined.

We're not going anywhere."

“Democracy is actually supposed to be lived in this building.

But that doesn't happen.

We will take back our democracy and establish a real leader instead of people who hide and turn their tails when things get tough.”

The rallies have now spread to other cities.

Most recently, truckers and motorists blocked the Ambassador Bridge, which connects Canada to the US state of Michigan.

Almost a quarter of trade with the United States goes through this bridge.

The Canadian Prime Minister reacted sharply:

Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada

“The laws of this country are made by a government that trusts science, believes in facts and doesn't listen to the people blocking our roads and borders.

That's not how politics is done in this country, that's not how Canadians are brought together.

We will continue to focus on keeping our people whole, safe, healthy and prosperous."

According to surveys, the government's strict corona policy has been supported by the majority of Canadians in recent years.

Almost 80 percent of Canadians are vaccinated, and more than 40 percent have received a booster shot.

In fact, it is probably a particularly loud minority that affects public life so massively here in Ottawa.
