Gas prices are rising unabated.

But now a Munich senior citizens' advisory board is sounding the alarm because a large chunk of the price increase by the Munich public utility company (SWM) is homemade.

Munich - Wilhelm Kling, Senior Advisory Board in Bogenhausen, is familiar with the energy sector.

The 77-year-old worked for decades as a commercial clerk for the Isar-Amper-Werke.

When the energy bill comes his way, he takes a very close look: he expected the price for his gas to be higher.

And yet he is very annoyed: As he can prove in black and white, the increase in the basic price accounts for almost 30 percent of his price premium.

For him, this is 7.30 euros per month and 87.60 euros per year.

Kling: "I just don't understand why the public utilities have to increase the basic price now of all times, when the price is already exploding."

Energy prices: senior citizens' advisory board calls on the city of Munich to intervene

It's not that he has problems paying his bills, but many people in Munich feel differently.

“Think of those who receive basic security.

They are now receiving a 130-euro subsidy from the federal government, which the public utilities are now practically collecting.

That can not be."

Kling is disappointed with the public utilities, the city's political leaders and the chamberlain - and demands: "A city should not be run like a corporation, but act socially."

And what do the public utilities say?

When it was announced in November that the gas price would increase for 200,000 customers (in addition to the electricity price) and that a two-person household would have to expect additional costs of around 23 euros a month from January 2022, this was accompanied by the enormous increase in wholesale prices and the increase in the CO2 price for fossil fuels from 25 to 30 euros per tonne.

There was also a detailed market analysis, in which the triggers for the rising prices were analyzed: There was “on the one hand the global economic recovery after the Corona slump.

The large economies and companies need more energy to ramp up their production, and they also build up reserves for security and for the approaching winter," it says, among other things.

High basic price: That's what the Munich public utility company says

Lots of words about the global situation, but not a word about our own basic price.

Stadtwerke's answer: "The basic price consists of the costs of using the network, the costs of measuring the amount of energy used and the costs of service and sales.

After SWM has been able to keep the basic price constant for many years (since 2013 for natural gas, since 2017 for electricity), they now unfortunately have to pass on the service and sales costs (mainly personnel costs) that have risen in recent years.

As of January 1st, 2022, these will increase by EUR 5.12 per year in the general tariff.

For other tariffs, this value may vary slightly."

This may be an explanation for Wilhelm Kling, but he cannot understand it - and certainly does not approve of it.

He fears that the social gap in the city will continue to widen and that the price policy of the public utilities will contribute to this.

Pensioners also criticized the MVV

Gas and electricity prices are just one aspect, things are no better for the MVV.

"I'm involved in the talks about the 365-euro ticket," says Kling, "but what happens then: the MVV tariffs will be increased again.

At Stadtwerke and the city, there is a wide gap between full-bodied announcements and reality.” But the 77-year-old does not allow himself to be frustrated.

"You have to defend yourself and fight," he recommends.

Incidentally, he only thinks heating tips make sense to a certain extent – for many they might even sound cynical.

“As far as I know, 30,000 people are already freezing in the city.

I don't know where they should save."

Kling wishes for more warmth - especially in the hearts of the municipal utility managers!
