The Jumps and Tricks Athletes at the Beijing Winter Olympics Are Banned from Executing

2022-02-10T05:04:42.113Z

Some maneuvers are feats in the eyes of the public, but they threaten the safety of the athletes who execute them.

The perfection of the movements is one of the demands in several of the disciplines that compete in the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. But some of these feats are prohibited due to the danger they imply.

The French ex-skater Surya Bonaly, who has been named in the press again after the first quadruple jump completed last Monday by the Russian Kamila Valieva, tried this maneuver in 1992, without success for the juries.

However, his historical routine was executed in 1998 at the Nagano Winter Olympics in 1998 when he performed the prohibited back jump

since 1976. He did it without seeming much effort and landing on one foot.

The reasons for the prohibition of some movements have to do with the safety of the athletes, according to a study by the International Olympic Committee, about 12% of almost 3,000 athletes who participated in the PyeongChang Winter Olympics in 2018, presented to the minus one injury.

Despite the perfect execution of some unprecedented maneuvers, such as that of the medalist Bonaly in 1998, the Olympic Committee has on its list a series of prohibited routines for athletes, especially for skaters who do not perform with protective equipment.

Here are some of the jumps and tricks banned from the Beijing Winter Olympics:

The jump back

This movement can lead to the athlete's disqualification, since it represents a risk of injury to important areas of the body such as the head.

The maneuver consists of rotating 360 degrees in the air and being upside down and then landing on both feet or only one, as Surya Bonaly did.

Two skaters participate in this maneuver: one of them grabs the other by the ankles and suspends him in the air while they spin.

The bottom skater then dips their head almost to the ground, making that stunt one of the riskiest.

The move is also known as a

bounce spin

.

International Skating Union rules dictate that this trick is incorrect because pair skaters can only do holds that are hand-to-hand, arm, body, or upper leg.

the

'detroiter'

This acrobatic consists of the man lifting his partner horizontally and putting him behind his head while making turns.

The move is also banned by the International Skating Union.

The trick involves speed and strength, especially from the partner charging the other person.

Lifts without hand support

As its name indicates, this movement in pairs consists of one of the skaters holding the other by the feet while they rise without the help of their arms.

It is executed while both are spinning.

It is similar to the

Headbanger

and is not accepted by the Olympic Committee rules.

Not all athletes agree with the prohibition of some tricks and jumps, considering that they limit creativity and variety in routines.
