The Carabineros and the Prosecutor's Office are investigating the circumstances in which a 28-year-old truck driver died after falling from a bridge in the Antofagasta region, while groups of truckers have cut off routes and blocked access to the provincial capital since Thursday afternoon in protest at what they consider to be a lack of security.
According to preliminary information from Carabineros, the incident occurred when a group of carriers had an altercation with a group of pedestrians who were traveling along Route 1 km 30, route B-400.
"Due to a dynamic that is under investigation, this young truck driver would have fallen from an underpass," said General Gonzalo Castro, head of the Carabineros Second Zone of Antofagasta.
The institution reported that there are two detainees who were accused by witnesses as allegedly "responsible, or who would have caused the fall of this transporter."
Later, a third person was arrested in the Mejillones commune, and all of them are scheduled for a hearing to formalize charges on Monday, while the Prosecutor's Office continues its investigative work.
In a statement, the National Truck Drivers Confederation (CNDC) stated that this fact "does nothing more than demonstrate the absolute lack of security."
In Santiago, from the Palacio de La Moneda, the Minister of the Interior, Rodrigo Delgado, said this Friday that he has been in communication with President Piñera.
"In this matter, he has asked me to have a plan with the police and that I go to Antofagasta and we are waiting for the clearing of the routes," said the authority.
From the Presidency they indicated, through a statement, that the president requested that a dialogue with the leaders and transport unions of the area begin "immediately" to listen to their concerns and address solutions.
In addition, Piñera requested a meeting at the government house to coordinate the movement of more officials to the area.
