Israeli apartheid

The report presented by Amnesty International accumulates evidence of the systematic mistreatment of the Palestinian population

In this 2022 it will be 55 years since the Israeli occupation of Palestine and the information continues to generate a growing alarm not only because of the territorial conflict but also because of the objective conditions of human rights.

In a detailed 182-page report, Amnesty International has accused Israel of practicing racial discrimination against the Palestinian population without avoiding calling it Israeli

apartheid

, something it had not done until now, although other organizations such as Human Rights Watch had.

The report presented last Tuesday by the Secretary General of Amnesty International, Agnès Callamard, documents in a comprehensive and detailed manner a range of systematic and prolonged practices that accumulate evidence of institutionalized discrimination against the Palestinian population.

The organization considers that they fit with the definition given by the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, and the consequent obligation to act against it: unlawful killings, forced transfers, mass confiscations or denial of citizenship, among others.

All this constitutes part of a policy of harassment of the Palestinian population regardless of who is in charge of the Israeli Government.

It is not a specific accusation because other important international organizations, and also Israelis, defenders of human rights, as well as authorized voices within their society —the former Attorney General and former Supreme Court Justice Michael Ben Yair from this same newspaper—, have denounced that Millions of Palestinians are deprived of their rights following a pattern of racial discrimination similar to the one that prevailed in South Africa until 1992. It is, according to this vision, a

modus operandi

backed by a legal system that serves as a shield for these discriminatory practices and grants in impunity in most cases for the crimes that may be committed.

But the Israeli policy against the Palestinian population has also taken advantage of international inaction.

For decades, Israel has been protected by its position as a privileged ally of the United States in the Middle East and has close ties with authoritarian Arab regimes.

Since 2000 it has been a preferred trade partner of the European Union and, in 2017, US President Donald Trump unilaterally recognized Jerusalem as Israeli capital in contravention of UN resolutions.

Nor was the annexation of the Syrian territories in the Golan Heights rejected in 2019, and the current Joe Biden Administration has not reversed those decisions.
