In the event of a Russian attack on Ukraine, the EU would impose sanctions on Russia's financial and energy sectors.
"The export of high-tech products would also be affected," said EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Friday after a phone call with a number of Western heads of state and government on the Ukraine conflict.
The punitive measures would be “massive”, she also emphasized.
In addition to von der Leyen, Chancellor Olaf Scholz, US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, Great Britain's Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other heads of state and government from Western countries also took part in the short-term telephone switchboard.
The fear that Russia could attack the neighboring country had recently increased.
According to Western information, Moscow has massed more than 100,000 soldiers on the border with Ukraine in recent months, but has rejected any plans of attack.
The Kremlin says it feels threatened by NATO.
According to SPIEGEL information, the US warned the Allies in Europe that they feared a Russian attack on Wednesday.
