The compulsory vaccination debate occupies all of Germany.

Chief physician Peter Neubauer considers compulsory vaccination in the healthcare system to be the second-best solution - the interview.

Munich – The facility-related vaccination requirement for practices, clinics and nursing homes is supposed to come into force on March 15th.

But Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder* (CSU*) has announced that the implementation will be suspended for the time being.

A good decision?

For the time being, Bavaria will not implement the facility-related compulsory vaccination in healthcare and nursing.

As chief physician, are you relieved or disappointed?

I am disappointed that the facility-related vaccination requirement is not consistently implemented.

However, it would make even more sense to introduce a general obligation to vaccinate - the discussions about the facility-related variant would then have been superfluous.

Some facilities fear a staffing problem if employees who are unwilling to be vaccinated leave.

don't you?

We hope that we will continue to increase the willingness to vaccinate and do everything we can for the employees.

Some employees would certainly quit, but many wouldn't either – the alternatives aren't endless.

How do your employees perceive the discussion?

Many of our employees feel unfairly treated by the facility-related vaccination requirement and call for general vaccination.

From an epidemiological point of view, it is also incomprehensible why the protection of people requiring care should only be designed so one-sidedly.

Chief physician in the Merkur interview: "I personally think that general vaccination is necessary"

Why do you think compulsory vaccination is necessary - and do you now see it as being in danger?

Personally, I think the general obligation to vaccinate is necessary to protect us from future, possibly more aggressive Corona* variants.

I'm just afraid that a general obligation to vaccinate is currently not enforceable.

By autumn at the latest, we will therefore almost inevitably get into the next wave without a sufficient vaccination rate.

I would like politicians to act in a similarly courageous and consistent manner on the subject of compulsory vaccination as Austria, Italy and Greece are showing us.

The German Hospital Society no longer assumes that the health care system will be overwhelmed by the omicron wave.

Do you share this assessment?

I think this assessment is unrealistic.

In fact, our healthcare system is already overburdened again - due to the extensive absence of employees due to infections and quarantine as well as the many numerous operations and measures that are now being postponed and will at some point have to be made up for by staff who are still massively overworked.
