Opinion | Northern Front: Walking on a Thin Rope | Israel today

Moscow does not hide its displeasure with the continuation of Israeli activity in Syria, and even took action when its planes began patrolling alongside Syrian planes along the border with Israel.

There is apparently nothing new on the northern border, and many mistakenly believe that this is in Israel's favor.

Despite Moscow's weak protests, the IDF continues to attack Syria, and according to Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, these attacks are pushing the Iranians to their feet.

In Lebanon, however, the political and economic crisis weakened Hezbollah, and even limited its ability to act against Israel.

But the silence is fragile, and even deceptive.

Last week we received a reminder of this, after an anti-aircraft missile fired by the Syrians at Air Force planes operating in their territory penetrated Israeli territory, and exploded in the skies of central Israel. In response, Israel attacked the missile battery fired from In the case of the Syrians, while in Lebanon, Hassan Nasrallah praises the fact that his organization has been equipped with advanced air defense systems that allow it to push, even if partially, the Israeli Air Force out of Lebanon.

In all this - there is seemingly nothing new.

For years, the Syrians have responded by firing anti-aircraft missiles whenever Israel attacks them. In February 2018, an Air Force plane shot down, and last year anti-aircraft missiles fired at the shores of Tel Aviv and the Dimona area fell.

There is nothing new in Nasrallah's arrogant words either, since as early as last year his organization fired an anti-aircraft missile at an Israeli UAV that was flying in the skies of the Lebanese Valley.

The missile missed its target, but in Israel it was reported at the time that the Air Force had made changes to the flight paths of its aircraft to keep them away from the range of Hezbollah missiles.

Still, it is not another of the same.

Israel has been marching on Syria for a long time.

Israeli attacks on the land of this country apparently help Assad restrict the activities of the Iranians on his land, but he has no intention of disengaging from Iran.

But it is not Assad who is the problem, but Moscow, who does not hide her displeasure with the continuation of Israeli activity in Syria, and even went from a stage of talk to action, when its planes began patrolling with Syrian planes along the border with Israel.

Iran also has no plans to withdraw from Syria, and as it has remotely activated the Houthis in Yemen against the Emirates, and its loyalist militias in Iraq against the Americans, it may try to exact a price from Israel.

In Lebanon, too, there is no reason to assume that Hezbollah's missiles will rust in the warehouses, since a gun you see in the first act ends up firing in the third act.

This is the case with the air defense systems that the organization smuggled into Lebanese territory, as well as all of the organization's efforts to improve its missiles (the missile accuracy project), about which former Prime Minister Netanyahu has many warnings, but seems to have made headlines recently.

The situation on the northern border is certainly worrying, and Israel must prepare for the future - whether it is a political effort or a military move by Syria and Iran, or even Moscow, for whatever reason, to restrict Syrian air force activity, or whether it is Nasrallah's attempt to change the rules. The game and push the Israeli planes out of Lebanon.

Prime Minister Bennett's focus on Iran is important in the long run, but will not solve the challenges of the 'here and now' on the northern border.
