The Qatari-affiliated al-Arabi al-Jadid newspaper reported this morning (Saturday) from Egyptian sources on intensive contacts by Egyptian intelligence in an attempt to cool the situation in the Gaza Strip following the elimination of the three terrorists from the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades in Nablus last Tuesday.

According to the report, the purpose of the Egyptian contacts is to prevent actions that could escalate the situation and provoke tension in the Gaza Strip.

Sources noted that senior Egyptian intelligence officials have demanded that senior members of Hamas' terrorist organizations and Islamic Jihad keep quiet and not promote actions that could disrupt the Gaza Strip's rehabilitation process.

It was also reported that senior Egyptian officials had asked Hamas to take control of the situation at the border fence with Israel in order to prevent such actions.

Sources said that senior Hamas and Islamic Jihad officials used the contacts with Egypt to send a message to Israel regarding the prisons, and demanded "an end to Israel's provocations and punitive measures against Palestinian prisoners."

Officials also stressed that the process of rehabilitating the Gaza Strip "will not be a sword around the neck of the resistance" and will not divert them from their main issues, chief among them "Jerusalem and the prisoners."

Senior members of terrorist organizations also stressed the need to separate the issues, and that the quiet situation in the Gaza Strip is a mainly Israeli demand, and Gaza "can respond to any aggression."

According to the report, senior officials threatened that "the situation will become hell for Israel, and not the other way around."
