In 2024, Deutsche Bahn wants to start building the S7 extension to Geretsried.

A tight schedule of which there are doubts.

Geretsried – The mayor of Geretsried, Michael Müller, and the minister of transport, Kerstin Schreyer, recently discussed important infrastructure issues for the region behind closed doors in a group of prominent figures.

The main focus was the stalled B11 transfer.

But it was also about the long-awaited S-Bahn extension to Geretsried.

When asked by our newspaper, the head of the town hall provided information about exactly what was discussed in an interview.

The Mayor of Geretsried, Michael Müller.

Mayor Müller, Minister of Transport Schreyer spent a good hour talking to you.

How many minutes was it about the S-Bahn extension?

Müller:

(smiles) I didn't measure the time with the stopwatch.

The reason for the conversation was the relocation of the B11.

However, this topic cannot be considered without the subject of the S-Bahn.

However, the transport minister is not responsible for the realization of the S-Bahn extension, but Deutsche Bahn.

So it was more about how to move the B11 forward, considering the fact that an S-Bahn should also be built.

For content-related questions about the S7 extension, we would have needed the planning agency, DB Netz.

But she wasn't at the table.

According to Bahn, the date for the commissioning of the track extension to Geretsried depends on the completion of the preliminary planning for the lowering of the station in Wolfratshausen.

Do you know more about this?

Müller:

Nothing that I could pass on verified.

I would be lying if I said I had no information at all.

But since I'm not the railway, I don't want to pass on statements from the meeting publicly.

Does the conversion of the train station in Wolfratshausen also affect Geretsried?

Müller:

In a certain point, we are already touched by it.

From the station, the industrial track is owned by the city of Geretsried.

That's why our building authority takes part in the meetings about the train station in Wolfratshausen.

Do you have any idea why the planning approval process takes so long?

Müller:

What I notice is that we have been given a schedule that is already at the end.

We still don't have a plan approval decision.

But it should have been there a long time ago.

If the construction of the track extension is to start in 2024 as officially announced, the railways will have to make up for this loss of time somehow.

Does that shorten the preparation time?

I wonder how this is supposed to work.

How do we want to achieve the mobility turnaround when procedures such as the S-Bahn extension take years?

Public transport plays a not insignificant role in the traffic turnaround.

Müller:

Major projects such as the S-Bahn extension are essential prerequisites for this.

And the railway is an essential backbone of public transport.

Without efficient and attractive public transport, we will not achieve the mobility turnaround.

I brought that up at the meeting.

The B11 relocation and the S-Bahn extension are closely linked, but will be dealt with in two separate procedures.

Does that really make sense?

Müller:

The two projects really shouldn't be mixed up.

If you drill down on one of the two methods, the whole thing is based on what takes the longest ...

... and everything is pushed back even further.

There is a risk that conditions will change.

Müller:

We noticed that when planning the B11 relocation, which we did and will now revise again.

Because they have overtaken each other in the meantime.

At the time, we assumed around 22,000 cars.

Now there are over 40,000 cars driving on the B11.

This is a development that no one saw coming.

And if, as planned, the B11 and the S-Bahn are built at the same time, we will have a problem at the north entrance.

A space problem?

Müller:

If an S-Bahn line is built there, there will be no more space for road construction.

The B11 is supposed to have four lanes at this point.

An alternative road must be built to allow traffic to continue flowing.

This is where the two projects get in the way.

How can this knot be untied?

Müller:

Depending on when the S-Bahn actually gets going, you could use the time to bring forward the conversion of the north entrance.

We also spoke to the Minister of Transport about this.

This is one of the reasons why we want to revise the plans quickly and come to a conclusion on how the area can be designed without crossings.

What costs do you expect for the revision of the plans?

Müller:

The plans back then cost 200,000 euros.

For the update we expect a sum between 200,000 and 500,000 euros.

Assuming the City Council agrees, we intend to commission the update as soon as possible.

What comes after the appointment with Transport Minister Schreyer?

Müller:

I will also contact Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing.

For future-oriented mobility in a growth region like ours, the projects must be pushed more than before.

How can the city keep building up pressure?

Müller:

That absolutely has to happen at the same time.

As you can see, if you don't move, you're just one file number among many.

We have to get citizens, clubs and associations on board.

However, it must not only be about road and rail, but about the mobility turnaround in its entirety.

We need a self-contained concept.

I still miss that.

We need the federal, state and local governments to work together to achieve the turnaround in transport.

To do this, we have to overcome thinking in terms of castes and responsibilities.
