Holzkirchen – A flamed maple from Landsberg brought in almost 17,000 euros in the timber submission of the Holzkirchen forest owners' association.

This year's Oberland timber submission recently took place under the leadership of the Holzkirchen Association of Forest Owners (WBV) and supported by the Office for Food, Agriculture and Forestry in Holzkirchen (AELF).

In the 24th edition, high-quality deciduous and softwood trunks were auctioned again.

Four forest owner associations from Upper Bavaria, four forest companies of the Bavarian State Forests, the municipal forest administration in Munich and the Tyrol Forest Association delivered 658 cubic meters this year - around 140 more than in 2021.

Interested bidders could examine the logs at the storage area in St. Heinrich am Starnberger See from mid-January and then submit their offers in writing.

The bids were traditionally opened on the first Thursday in February.

According to the organizer, it was pleasing that, in addition to the quantity on offer, the average prices and number of bidders had increased significantly compared to the previous year.

The so-called bride – i.e. the trunk with the highest bid per cubic meter – did not come from Tyrol like in previous years, but from the Landsberg forestry company, a company of the Bavarian state forests.

The figured maple fetched exactly 16,969 euros per cubic meter, the highest price ever offered in the history of the Oberland timber submission.

As WBV Managing Director Alexander Necker explained, the rare locking is a growth anomaly.

This unusual grain enables the production of particularly valuable veneer.

As in the previous year, a veneer factory in Karlstadt am Main secured this most expensive log on the site.

From Germany, Austria and France

"I am very pleased that our submission in 2022 again sent a positive signal for the marketing of our high-quality, domestic deciduous and softwoods," said Necker and went on to say that in addition to the well-known veneer and sawmills, more and more regional carpentry companies are bidding.

This year, 70 bidders from Germany, Austria and France took part in the tender - twelve more than in 2021.

In terms of delivery volume, oak and sycamore were once again the most important deciduous tree species, with 190 and 122 cubic meters respectively.

The supply of valuable spruce trunks has increased significantly to 129 cubic metres.

The average revenue for all tree species remained exactly the same as in the previous year at 427 euros per cubic meter, although there were large differences depending on the tree species.

Average revenues increased

The average revenue for oak, elm, spruce and larch has increased significantly compared to the previous year.

The previous problem child, Esche, was also able to increase significantly.

According to Necker, the fact that 97 percent of the entire range was marketed speaks for its high quality.

The WBV Holzkirchen provided the largest share of the tender offer with 177 cubic meters.

Its chairman Alexander Mayr was also satisfied: "Our Oberland value wood submission stands for sustainable management with nature and value creation on site.

It is testimony to the fact that, in addition to the well-known softwoods such as spruce and fir, many other native tree species are also highly valued economically.”

benefits for society as a whole

Forest Director Christian Webert from AELF Holzkirchen emphasized that the logs were real delicacies: "Of course, that's not day-to-day business.

It is all the more a pleasure to see such top products being marketed.”

This is also motivation and appreciation for the forest owners, whose work contributes to climate and species protection and thus to the benefit of society as a whole, said Webert and was happy: "If such great products come out for high-quality veneers, furniture or musical instruments, that's it but all the more beautiful.”
