Omicron rages in Germany.

The corona numbers are extreme.

Who needs treatment in the hospital?

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) presents an overview of the Covid 19 patients.

Berlin – Germany is heading towards the peak of the omicron wave.

Nevertheless, a debate about easing and corona vaccination has broken out.

Vaccination is immensely important in the fight against corona.

Data show: The risk of developing serious illness from Covid-19 is significantly lower for those who have been vaccinated.

A table on the vaccination status also shows how effective the vaccination against Covid-19 is.

In its current weekly report from Thursday, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) broken down corona cases by age group, disease severity and vaccination status.

These are symptomatic Covid-19 cases that were recorded from the second to the fifth reporting week of 2022 - i.e. from January 10 to February 2, 2022 (data status: February 8).

Vaccination status of the over 60s - So many unvaccinated people have to be treated in the hospital

In the over 60 age group, 29,965 infected people developed symptoms.

Of these, 14,096 had a booster shot and 7,655 were fully vaccinated.

8,205 infected people were unvaccinated.

1,786 Covid patients with symptoms had to be treated in a hospital.

Of these, more than half, 958 were unvaccinated, 367 had basic immunization and 461 were boosted.

225 Covid 19 cases had to be treated in an intensive care unit.

Of these, 157 people in the age group over 60 years were unvaccinated.

37 were fully vaccinated and 31 of these had a booster vaccination.

The RKI puts the number of deaths at a total of 327.

Of these, 204 were unvaccinated.

Of those who died, 58 were fully vaccinated and 65 had received a booster dose.

Symptomatic Covid-19 cases: vaccination status in the age group 18 to 59 years

In the 18 to 59 age group, a total of 242,501 people infected with Covid developed symptoms.

According to the RKI, 103 Covid patients had to be treated in an intensive care unit.

70 of them were unvaccinated. 19 corona patients were fully vaccinated.

According to this, 14 had a booster vaccination. 38 corona deaths were recorded in this age group.

Of these, 27 were unvaccinated, 8 basic immunized and 3 boosted.

"Especially for deaths, changes in the number of cases can be expected in the following weeks," said the RKI in connection with the deceased.

Unvaccinated people become seriously ill more often, as the RKI table shows.

However, older people who have been vaccinated can also become infected with omicrons and become seriously ill.

"If many older people and unvaccinated people become infected, the burden on the clinics is significantly higher," said intensive care physician Christian Karagiannidis to the editorial network Germany (RND).

It is therefore difficult to estimate how high the burden in the healthcare system will be.

The scientific head of the DIVI intensive care register and Corona expert council member is optimistic despite many uncertainties and hopes that Germany will come through the omicron wave well.

Since more than 90 percent of all cases are now caused by omicron, the RKI no longer reports corona cases in which the omicron variant was detected separately from February 10th.

According to Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD), the omicron wave could already peak in mid to late February.
