On January 25, 200 Daesh fighters launched a well-prepared assault on the largest prison in northeastern Syria held by the Kurds to free thousands of their supporters.
At the same time, on the other side of the border, in Iraq, a post of the security forces was attacked in the province of Diyalá.
Despite these spectacular operations, the Islamic State (IS) is retreating in Iraq, but continues to take advantage of persistent instability to act in Syria.
• Why Daesh has weakened in Iraq?
Since mid-2020, the number of jihadist attacks across Iraq has decreased.
From more than 800 during the second quarter of 2020, they have since fallen to an average of 330, every three months.
At the same time, the sophistication of their operations has declined.
While they accounted for more than 60% of attacks at the start of 2020, attacks with explosive devices, operations against security force checkpoints and targeted attacks against people have dropped to around 40%…
