Against the background of the acute crisis on the border between Ukraine and Russia, NATO is inviting itself more clearly into the French presidential campaign.
For a long time, Moscow has feared a future membership of Kiev within the Atlantic Alliance and could, according to the United States, go so far as to invade its neighbor.
With the prospect of such a war which, of course, would not directly involve NATO, the debates on the North Atlantic Alliance are relaunched in France while several candidates wish to leave it (Jean-Luc Mélenchon) or at least leave the integrated military command (Marine Le Pen, Eric Zemmour, Fabien Roussel) that France had reintegrated in 2008. Alliance who fear in particular a conflict in which France would be drawn, in spite of itself, by a game of alliances.

" on France 5 on Sunday February 13, Marine Le Pen, the president of the National Rally, for example strongly criticized article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty which enshrines the principle of "
collective defense
" of the Alliance and whose "
automaticity
", according to her, would deprive France of its "
autonomy
".

I am opposed to any automaticity
," said the presidential candidate.
That does not mean that France would not decide spontaneously, as it was able to do, to come to the support of its allies in circumstances where they would be attacked.
But what I refuse is automaticity because I believe that automaticity is contrary to autonomy
”.
On the set, Marine Le Pen was immediately criticized by General (2S) Dominique Trinquand.
“
The automaticity exists if we stay in NATO.
The integrated command is officers who are in the structures and who allow us to be informed.
Article 5 applies when you are a member of NATO, whether you are in the integrated structure or not.

Despite their political disagreement, Marine Le Pen and General Trinquand share the idea that Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty would imply "
automaticity
" for all NATO members, who would have an obligation to assist in case of an armed attack by one of the member states of the Alliance.
This ultimately convergent dialogue caused a strong reaction on Twitter from the deputy director of the Foundation for Strategic Research, Bruno Tertrais, who believes that such automaticity does not exist.
