In Kochel, work on cleaning up the household waste dump has started.

The cost is 2.5 million euros.

The rifle club has to partially stop shooting for a few weeks.

Kochel am See –

In Kochel, a project that has been planned for a long time can now be implemented: As the municipality has announced, in the past few days work has begun on setting up the construction site at the fairground for the rehabilitation of the household waste dump.

The work should be completed by the end of May.

Drainage will be laid and a groundwater treatment plant will be built.

Tar oil was found in 91 wells over the past few years on the approximately 115,000 square meter area.

It is in all likelihood the cause of increased concentrations and loads in groundwater for PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons), according to the municipality.

"Even with additional historical research, it was not possible to find out how the tar oil got onto this area," says Mayor Thomas Holz.

Due to the increased values, the district office ordered the construction of drainage and a groundwater treatment plant as a remedial measure in 2018.

"The former household waste dump will not be expanded and disposed of," writes Holz.

"However, this is intended to prevent pollutants from flowing from the old deposit in the direction of Kochelsee and Loisach."

Costs are 2.5 million euros

A drainage line is now being built near the banks of the Kochelsee and along the Loisach canal.

It leads from the northern end of the bathing lawn at the Trimini car park to the level of the building yard.

Approximately in the middle of this line, a groundwater treatment plant will be built, from which the cleaned water will then be metered into the Loisach canal.

"This ensures that no pollutants can escape from the former household waste dump into the surrounding waters," says Holz.

In 2018, the municipality spoke out in favor of a complete or partial excavation of the contaminated areas, but "one can live with the current solution": "This at least ensures that the sports facilities located there can remain in place." only the Kochler Schützen affected.

They will probably have to stop shooting with the 25-meter small-caliber sport pistol by May.

"Air rifles and air pistols will continue to be fired," says rifle master Stefan Greif.

It would have been nice if the construction work had taken place during the Corona period, when sports operations had to be suspended.

"But the comrades understand the construction work," says Greif.

Schützengesellschaft has to stop operations for a few weeks

The work should have been done a long time ago.

"Since the entire facility is located in an area that is sensitive from a nature conservation point of view, further investigations and coordination were necessary," explains Mayor Holz when asked by our newspaper.

It is also important to him that the construction work takes place in late autumn or spring so that neither the local clubs are affected in their activities on the sports facilities nor the bathers.

Mayor Holz praises engineering office

He is happy, says Holz, that things are starting now.

The costs are around 2.5 million euros, the municipality has already paid its own share.

The costs now incurred are financed by the Society for Contaminated Site Remediation in Bavaria (GAB).

The engineering office involved in Munich praised Holz as "highly committed".

The municipality is now responsible for the entire client-side support of the very extensive project.

"Here, not inconsiderable resources are tied up on the part of the administrative staff, which are not replaced."
