One dead and many injured in train collision

Two S-Bahn trains collide south of the Bavarian capital.
One person dies and more than a dozen people are injured.
Many passengers are still being examined.
Schäftlarn – In the head-on collision of two S-Bahn trains in the Munich district, one person was killed and at least 14 people were injured.
80 other passengers would be medically examined, said the spokesman for the Munich police headquarters, Andreas Franken, in the evening.
"This is terrible news," writes Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder on Twitter.
The trains collided around 4:35 p.m. near Ebenhausen-Schäftlarn station.
The cause was initially completely unclear.
According to initial findings, the two trains were traveling in opposite directions south of Munich.
All passengers recovered from the trains
In the area of the collision, the railway line is single track.
Franken explained why both trains were running on the route at the same time is the subject of the investigation.
The police headquarters work together with the federal police.
Railway safety is usually the responsibility of the Federal Police.

The passengers were rescued from the trains.
Most of them were taken to the Schäftlarn monastery for further care.
The identity of the fatally injured victim was not immediately clear.
The fire department reported that it was a passenger.
There was also no precise information about the severity of the injuries to the other victims.
Apparently one of the trains derailed
According to police spokesman Franken, one of the trains derailed, but both trains are still standing.
Around 130 police officers and numerous firefighters were on site for the rescue work and investigations.

The station is on the route of the S7 to Wolfratshausen.
As the operator of the S-Bahn, Deutsche Bahn (DB) initially announced via Twitter that there were “objects on the route” in the area between Ebenhausen-Schäftlarn and Baierbrunn.
It was later announced that the route was closed due to a rescue service and police operation and that a rail replacement bus service had been set up.
