An angry mob has killed a man accused of burning a Koran in central Pakistan, police said yesterday (Sunday).
Police said more than 80 people had been arrested following the lynching in the Hanwal area of Punjab province, and Prime Minister Imran Khan had promised to punish those responsible with full severity.
The angry mob - which was armed with batons, axes and iron rods - reportedly abducted the suspect from custody before the lynching was made and then his body hung on a tree.
She was eventually transferred to the victim's family, and she buried his body yesterday.
The commander of the police station from which the victim was abducted said he had been suffering from mental health problems for the past 15 years.
Just about two months ago, the manager of a Sri Lankan factory was murdered in another city in the province following allegations of blasphemy.
An angry mob beat him to death and burned his body.
Conservative Pakistan is legally prohibited from harming Islam, and those who violate it risk the death penalty.
Opponents of the law say it is often used to persecute minorities and close personal accounts, in cases with very little connection to religious issues.
