Sheikh Muafek Tarif, the spiritual leader of the Druze community in Israel, landed today (Monday) for a surprising visit to Moscow, the capital of Russia, due to recent events on the Druze mountain and the Syrian army's attempt to suppress protests there.
Triff is expected to meet with senior officials from the Kremlin, the Foreign Ministry and the Russian Defense Ministry.
In the last two weeks, the Druze community in Israel has been concerned about reports coming from members of the community in Syria about the mass exodus to the streets due to the economic situation and the abolition of subsidies for basic products.
According to them, Assad's army with the help of Hezbollah and Iranian agents are trying to suppress the just demonstrations due to Assad's fear of a repeated outbreak of the riots.

There are about 800,000 Druze in Syria and their population there is the largest in the Middle East (for comparison, in Lebanon about 250,000 and in Israel about 140,000).
About three-quarters of the Druze population in Syria lives in the southwest of the country close to Israel - on the Druze mountain also called Mount Huran, in the area of the town of Suida.
Sheikh Muafek Tarif's previous visit to Moscow was about two years ago, in March 2020. In the past, Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon warned of harming members of the Druze community in the raging war in Syria and even revealed that Israel conditioned humanitarian aid to Syrian rebels not to harm the Druze.
