The students of the P-Seminar "Latin Goes Tutorial" at the Ammersee-Gymnasium in Dießen are in the final for the "P-Seminar Prize" of the Bavarian Ministry of Education.

With their teacher Sabine Eggensberger, the 13 students created creative, imaginative and instructive videos.

Dießen

– Sabine Eggensberger never dared to dream of this dynamic when she developed the “Latin goes Tutorial” project together with 13 students from the Ammersee High School in Dießen two years ago.

It is about explanatory videos on the culture, military, mythology and language of the Romans, which are intended to bring students closer to Latin in a creative way.

The subject teacher of the P-Seminar was able to observe how the previously rather inconspicuous students blossomed in this ambitious project and not only outperformed the exquisite competition from the Rhabanus-Maurus-Gymnasium in St. Ottilien, but also received praise and honor from the Ministry of Education and the economy .

After winning second prize in the Lions Club's talent competition last year, their theme is now one of the 24 winners of the preliminary round for the Bavarian P-Seminar Prize.

Sabine Eggensberger, who speaks of "her boys" in a motherly manner, could almost burst with pride.

The students all come from the natural sciences branch and had opted for Latin as their second foreign language in sixth grade.

During the lockdown, the 16, 17 and 18-year-old students developed this subject, which for many was rather dry, into an exciting form of teaching on the YouTube video portal.

"Latin goes Tutorial" are explanatory videos.

Sabine Eggensberger divided her “boys” into four groups.

Three groups developed online lessons on the topics of culture, grammar and mnemonics.

The fourth group developed an app that is used to consolidate and deepen the content in a playful way.

To do this, the students also used mythology or put together a video from images.

The friends Valentin Pilz (Seefeld) and Valentin Wagner (Egling) were particularly concerned with the linguistic aspect.

They shot a total of five humorous and at the same time didactically clever videos on the subjects of declension, perfect families, ablative and vocative, which are already available on the YouTube channel "Adeamus et Videamus" ("Let's start, let's see", named after the school book of the same name) can be seen.

The two say they wanted to design something that differed from the usual educational videos.

"Something that makes Latin very simple in a very relaxed way." The most important thing when learning Latin is to always stick to the vocabulary.

After the eighth grade, this was completed with around 2000 words.

“What comes next is actually just a bit of grammar and repetition.

"I accompanied the boys for four years," says Sabine Eggensberger, who teaches French as well as Latin at the Ammersee-Gymnasium.

The senior teacher is happy about the hype that has broken out with the preliminary round decision about her hard-working students, who are heading for their Abitur this year. "The attention is good for them, they're doing great.

That gave them a great boost.”

From the 24 preliminary round winners, the four best P seminars at state level will now be determined, which will be honored online with the P seminar prize 2020/22 on March 18th.

In addition to Minister of Education Michael Piazolo, the general manager of the Association of Bavarian Business, Bertram Brossardt, the deputy manager of the Bildungswerk der Bayerischen Wirtschaft, Michael Mötter, and Elisabeth Benz, representative of the Eberhard von Kuenheim Foundation of BMW AG, want to take part in the digital celebration .

When selecting the winners, the focus is on the design, implementation and result of the P seminars.

In addition to ideas, objectives and planning, contacts with partners outside the school, the application of project management methods and teamwork, and the final presentation also play an important role.
