Borussia Mönchengladbach found what they were looking for in their own ranks for a successor to Max Eberl.

As the Bundesliga soccer club announced on Tuesday, Roland Virkus will be the new sports director.

The 55-year-old previous director of the youth academy should close the big gap that Eberl left three weeks ago with his surprising retirement from the professional business.

Mönchengladbach - "He has experience in running a professional football operation, experience in squad planning, experience in dealing with coaches and players, experience in dealing with player advisors and a large network.

He's the right man for this job," said Vice President Rainer Bonhof, commenting on the decision in favor of Virkus.

Virkus, who was born in Mönchengladbach, has been with Borussia since 1990 and initially worked as a youth coach for the U15, U17 and U19 teams.

Since 2008, the UEFA A license holder has been director of the youth academy.

"For me, this new task is a great challenge, which I approach with humility and respect, but also with great joy and full of energy.

I know that I'm not alone here, but that I have a great team at my side," said Virkus.

President Rolf Königs is in good spirits that Virkus will meet the requirements: “Borussia has continued to develop over the past few years.

Many people have contributed to this successful path.

We have a strong structure and a strong team.

I am very pleased that one of this team will now continue the work of Max Eberl in Roland Virkus.” Virkus is to be officially presented in the late afternoon.
