The Russian Investigative Committee announced today the opening of a criminal case after the discovery of mass graves of civilians in the Donbass region of eastern Ukraine.
"A criminal case has been filed over the discovery of mass graves of civilians in the Donbas region under Section 1 of Article 356 of the Russian Criminal Code," the RIA Novosti news agency quoted the commission as saying in a statement, adding: "The cruel treatment of the civilian population and the use of weapons are prohibited by the international treaty."
According to the commission, 5 mass graves were discovered in the village of Sloviansibrsk in the Sokogorovska Pervomaisk residential district, in the village of Vednoe 1 near Lugansk and on the outskirts of the village of Verkhneshefervska in the Krasnodonsky district, from August to October 2021.
The committee added, "The remains of at least 295 civilians killed as a result of the indiscriminate bombing of the Ukrainian armed forces in 2014, were exhumed, including the bodies of women of different ages."
