While the Constitutional Council will put an end on March 4 to the collection of the 500 sponsorships of elected officials necessary to participate in the first round of the presidential election, supporters of Christiane Taubira came to demonstrate this Tuesday evening in front of the state body to denounce the calls supposed left-wing parties not to sponsor the candidate.

Just over twenty activists stood under the columns of the Constitutional Council, lips taped and placards in hand displaying the inscription: "392,738 voters, where are our sponsorships", in reference to the number of voters registered in the Popular Primary, the citizen primary initiative which nominated the former Keeper of the Seals as candidate "from the left", on January 30th.

"Our vote is ignored, citizen expression is trampled on, democracy is muzzled", read an activist, saying that they were "millions waiting for leftist and ecology candidates to come together with Christiane Taubira" .

“We find it unfortunate to prevent a candidate”

Christiane Taubira, released on Monday by the Radical Party of the Left, her main supporter, has so far only 73 sponsorships.

Admittedly, his campaign started later, but this figure is much lower than that of his competitors on the left, while Anne Hidalgo (PS) already counts more than 1000, Fabien Roussel (PCF) 492, Yannick Jadot (EELV) 450 and Jean-Luc Mélenchon (LFI) 331.

“We find it unfortunate to prevent a candidate supported by hundreds of thousands of voters in the popular Primary from running for president”, confided the spokesperson for young people with Taubira, Soen Boulligny, to Liberation.

Christiane Taubira directly blamed the first secretary of the PS, Olivier Faure, for being responsible for the defection of the PRG.

“There always comes a time when the boss of the socialist party whistles the end of the freedom of the radical party”, estimated the Guyanese Tuesday evening on LCI.

Response from Olivier Faure on Twitter a few minutes after this outing: “Dear Christiane Taubira, the boss of the Socialist Party does not whistle anyone.

Everyone is free from their commitments.

No false lawsuits between us”.

A letter to the mayors of France

This Wednesday, the failed candidate sent a letter to the mayors of France, in which she asks them to sponsor her "in the name of democratic debate", which would otherwise be "cut off from the words of a stateswoman, free from gone ".

She recognizes in this missive a collection "more difficult than ever for many candidates".

“I solemnly appeal to you: if, as you know, your sponsorship does not necessarily constitute support for my project, it remains essential to my candidacy.

You hold the key to the democratic debate for the presidential election.

I'm counting on you, ”she pleads.

"My candidacy, although won after a vote that mobilized (nearly) 400,000 people, risks being hampered by political maneuvers or intimidation," she says again.

Jean-François Debat, mayor of Bourg-en-Bresse and in particular in charge of seeking sponsorship for the campaign of the socialist candidate Anne Hidalgo, said on Wednesday "sorry to see this attitude": "I take care to call the mayors, to convince them, but between convincing and constraining, there is a difference.

I don't see how we could ban them from anything, ”he insisted.
