It was the last piece of advice from Valérie Pécresse.

A few thousand railway workers demonstrated this Wednesday in front of the headquarters of the Ile-de-France regional council against the closing of counters in small stations.

“Valérie Pécresse has only one word in her mouth, it's the word security.

And yet, it is stripping the stations one by one, ”said Fabien Villedieu, Sud-Rail manager, at the microphone.

According to the union, Ile-de-France Mobilité (IDFM), the organizing authority for public transport in the Paris region chaired by Ms. Pécresse, and the SNCF plan to close 133 counters in low-traffic stations in the region.

The reorganization should be accompanied by 338 job cuts still according to Sud-Rail, or "about 500 jobs", which the SNCF disputes.

“Fake news”

Valérie Pécresse intervened during the regional council to deplore "fake news".

"Don't mind it, there are no station closures or job cuts," she assured elected officials.

“The internal transformation in progress aims to bring together employees who are often isolated with few contacts in collectives, mobile teams which will make it possible to reopen long-closed counters”, she justified.

Counters will however be closed or brought to close earlier in certain less frequented stations for the benefit of mobile teams, recognized the SNCF.

“Where in stations there were railway workers in the evening, well from 8:00 p.m. or 9:00 p.m. there will be no one left, you will be alone with your smartphone,” insisted Fabien Villedieu.

LFI and PCF elected officials present

The management of Transilien, the Paris suburban train division of the SNCF, relies on digitization and the fact that 98% of its users are connected to justify this reorganization.

But “the failures of SNCF Connect make it clear to us: fortunately we still have human beings to operate the public service”, mocked Fabien Villedieu.

The CGT-Cheminots, also present at the rally, called for "the abandonment of this reorganization project" which prefigures the opening to competition.

“This project is based on excessive productivity to achieve a margin on the IDFM contract which amounts to 12 billion euros for the SNCF”, underlined Olivier Maillet, representative of the CGT-Cheminots.

Elected officials from insubordinate France (LFI) like Alexis Corbière and from the Communist Party (PCF) also made the trip to support the demonstrators.
