If you plan to travel to Spain, this is what you need to know and what you can expect from your visit to the country during the covid-19 pandemic.

The basics

As a result of the emergence of the omicron variant of the coronavirus, the Spanish health authorities update the list of countries or areas that they consider to be at risk every seven days, so it is advisable to review the list before planning your trip.

There are no restrictions for travel within Spain, but testing and vaccination requirements apply for most international arrivals to the European country.

Fully vaccinated international travelers can now enter Spain.

But those people who travel from a third country —including those in Latin America and the United States— that are on the list of high-risk countries must also present some of the covid tests admitted by Spain, with a negative result.

In addition to the form, passengers must present a vaccination certificate or one of the covid tests accepted by Spain, with a negative result.

It is important to take into account that the certificates vary depending on whether they were issued by a member country of the European Union (EU) or in a third country.

Children under 12 years of age are exempt from presenting them.

Do I need to be vaccinated or get tested?

To enter Spain you have the option of presenting your vaccination certificate issued by a competent authority of the country where you were vaccinated or, if you are not vaccinated, one of the covid-19 tests accepted by Spain.

The vaccine that appears on your certificate must be one of those authorized by the World Health Organization (WHO) — Pfizer, Moderna, Astrazeneca, Johnson & Johnson, Sinopharm or SinoVac — according to the Government of Spain.

As of February 1, 2022, travelers from third countries (non-Spanish or non-EU residents) will have to present the certificate that certifies the booster dose if more than 270 days have elapsed since the administration of their last dose of the full vaccination schedule.

The booster vaccine should have been received 14 days before your arrival in the country.

If you do not have the vaccination certificate, you have the option of submitting one of the following tests to enter Spanish territory:

  • Negative antigen detection test issued within 24 hours prior to arrival in Spain.

  • Negative PCR issued within 72 hours prior to arrival in Spain.

Children under the age of 12 are not required to take this test.

  • Certificate of recovery after having passed covid-19 issued by the competent authority or by a medical service at least 11 days after carrying out the first diagnostic test with a positive result.

what restrictions are there

  • Spain proposed treating covid "not as a pandemic, but as an endemic"

After the debates on the mandatory use of masks outdoors to contain the spread of the coronavirus, the Ministry of Health reported that as of February 10, 2022, the use of masks outside is no longer mandatory in all autonomous communities. .

However, the obligation remains in massive outdoor events, on public transport and indoors.

In general, Spain is mainly open to places that tourists usually enjoy: parks, museums, ski resorts in winter, restaurants, bars, entertainment venues, shops and more.

However, most spaces have security measures such as the use of hand sanitizer.

Additionally, bars and restaurants in almost all regions are open with reduced capacity to allow for social distancing.

Take into account that each autonomous community is allowed to establish its own health measures in the face of the coronavirus pandemic.

Depending on the region you visit, there may be a more restrictive or relaxed guide.

How has covid-19 evolved in Spain?

In early February, Spain exceeded the ten million positive cases of covid-19 registered since the start of the pandemic, after adding 77,873 infected to the official count.

So far in 2022, Spain has added four million infected to its official record, at an average rate of one million per week.

This rapid rise is due to the circulation of the omicron variant, which has plunged the country into a sixth wave of infections and has ended up imposing itself as the dominant variant, according to data provided by the Ministry of Health.

However, the head of that ministry, Carolina Darias, assured in previous days that the country has already bent the curve of this wave.

With this figure, Spain ranks as the third country in the European Union with the highest number of infected behind France, according to data from the European Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
