Promoting democracy and shaping diversity – these are the goals of the federal initiative “Live democracy!”.

Now the district of Regensburg is involved.

Regensburg - Less than half of the world's population lives in a democracy, almost 40 percent even in a dictatorship.

In Germany we can count ourselves lucky: The Federal Republic is ranked 15th in the democracy index.

Nevertheless, new studies see democracy on the decline in this country too - it is important to protect it.

The federal program “Live Democracy!” has been committed to this since 2015.

Now the district of Regensburg* is also taking part in the initiative.

This was decided by the Youth Welfare Committee at the suggestion of District Administrator Tanja Schweiger at its meeting last Monday (February 14), according to a press release from the Regensburg district.

The district wants to create two part-time positions to implement the program.

The project sponsor is the district youth welfare office in Regensburg* in close cooperation with the association for youth work in the district of Regensburg eV

Regensburg: District wants to strengthen political education

The aim of "Live Democracy!" is to support civil society's commitment to democracy, to diverse and peaceful coexistence and to combating extremism.

Above all, children and young people, parents, family members and caregivers as well as young adults, all of whom are involved in child and youth welfare, should benefit from the "Live democracy!" concept and gain awareness of a diverse, open and tolerant society.

With the funding program, previous activities in the field of political education can be expanded even more and the prevention work against exclusion can be further strengthened, explains District Administrator Tanja Schweiger.

Existing offers such as "School without Racism - School with Courage" could also be supported with the program.

The goals of "Live democracy!"

"Live democracy!" has three main goals: promoting democracy, shaping diversity and preventing extremism.

The program aims to support children, adolescents and young adults in asserting their right to co-determination and in developing solutions to enable everyone in Germany to lead a peaceful life free of discrimination and to prevent anti-democratic and misanthropic attitudes.

Among other things, the funding program supports cities, districts and municipal associations in developing suitable local strategies for the specific situation.

A coordination and specialist office will be set up on site to coordinate the Partnership for Democracy.

A socio-pedagogical specialist and an administrative specialist will be created in the district of Regensburg.
