Voluntarily giving up your driver's license: unthinkable for many.

Hubert Rößner from Böbing took this step, even if it was not easy for the 90-year-old.

"But I don't want to endanger people on the road." Rößner hopes that his example will catch on.

Böbing - At the appointment at the driver's license office in Weilheim, the boss personally took the stamp in her hand, as the district office writes in its message: Sabrina Loy, Head of Driver Licensing, had already prepared the application for the RVO ticket for Rößner.

Hubert Rößner can use it to drive a bus in the region free of charge for three years.

It is a barter transaction with which the district wants to make it palatable for seniors to give up their driver's license.

The old “rag”: Rößner is allowed to keep the invalid driver’s license as a souvenir.

Loy also canceled Rößner's 66-year-old "Lapp" with the "Invalid" stamp.

The document, which was issued in 1955 in its original gray form in Aschaffenburg, can be kept as a souvenir by the Böbinger.

In addition, Rößner received a colorful bouquet of flowers from Erika Breu from the press office of the district office.

Breu thanked Rößner on behalf of the district authority for his exemplary initiative.

"It wasn't an easy decision"

"My idea was that a few older people might now think about whether they can actually still drive safely," said Rößner.

He himself found that – even if his eyes were still working well – the glare from headlights and reflective traffic signs caused him increasing problems when driving.

“It was not an easy decision as my mobility radius is now decreasing.

But I don't want to endanger other people on the road," says Rößner.

His daughter Rosl, who accompanied him when he was handed over to the authorities, was also relieved: "It is reassuring for me that my father now voluntarily does not drive." In future she will drive her father once a week: for shopping and errands , but also for trips together.

The head of the authority praises Böbinger for his decision

Rößner's first car was a BMW Isetta, he recalled.

This served him well in the 1950s when he was a trainee in the Bavarian State Forest: "It wasn't possible without a car when I had to drive into the forest." Head of several forest offices, including in Seeshaupt and Weilheim.

After retirement, he worked as a tour guide and as a forest surveyor in Indonesia and Fiji.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Schongau newsletter.)

"I am very pleased that Mr. Rößner is setting a good example," said Loy.

“For many older people, saying goodbye to their driver’s license is difficult.

And it is certainly not easy to admit to yourself that you can no longer drive a car safely." This initiative therefore represents a positive signal for other senior citizens. "We wish Mr. Rößner many more healthy and happy years in which he can live with his Explore our beautiful district with a free RVO ticket.”
