Millions of Americans were under winter weather watches, wind advisories or flood watches as a major storm with a "plenty of weather hazards" moved across the United States on Thursday.

The National Weather Service confirmed that two tornadoes touched down about 50 kilometers north of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, leaving trees on the road and unspecified structural damage.

Other tornadoes were reported in the town of Pell, east of Birmingham, and in Shelby County, southeast of the city.

In Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee, the US Storm Prediction Center was receiving reports of downed trees and power lines.

About 24,000 customers lost power Thursday night in Alabama, according to poweroutage.us.

In Tennessee there were 16,000 homes and businesses without power, while Kentucky and West Virginia each had more than 10,000 customers without power.

To the north, more than 24 million people were under a winter storm watch or warning.

"A dynamic winter storm is developing over the Southern Plains this morning and will produce a plethora of weather hazards across the central and eastern US through early Friday morning," the Weather Prediction Center said early Thursday.

Chance of storm flooding

As of Thursday night, there was a line of storms from Louisiana to New England.

Along with severe weather were isolated pockets of potential flooding fueled by severe thunderstorms as the storm moved east.

However, there is a higher risk of flooding in the northern fringes of warm, moist air colliding with cooler air.

There were flash flood warnings in central Alabama and flood warnings in parts of Illinois, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

On the cold side of the system, a thin band of snow fell from Oklahoma to Michigan.

Chicago experienced an intense snow band as the system progressed, depositing accumulations of up to 4.5 inches across the city.

Kansas City set a daily record on February 17 with 7 inches of snow, surpassing that of 1893 when 6 inches fell.

Other areas of the state recorded up to 10 inches.

But it's not just the American Midwest.

All the way to Maine, people will likely see the transition from rain to winter weather as cold air moves in.

"Winter storm warnings and winter weather advisories cover more than 1,500 miles from western Oklahoma to northern Maine," the forecast center said.

Cancellation of flights

Airlines canceled more than 1,300 flights arriving or departing from the US, according to tracking website FlightAware.

FlightAware said a third of flights were canceled from the Detroit metro area (more than 140 flights) and Kansas City airports.

A quarter of scheduled flights out of St. Louis Lambert International Airport were cancelled.

Hundreds of flights were canceled in the Chicago area, which saw snow and ice.

The cancellations included more than 260 flights at Chicago O'Hare (24% of the schedule) and 81 at Chicago Midway (31% of the schedule), according to FlightAware.

CNN's Gene Norman and Greg Wallace contributed to this report.
