The United States said tonight (Friday) that "significant progress" had been made during Vienna's talks to return to a nuclear deal with Iran, and saw that an agreement was possible within days if Iran "took the matter seriously".
Talks in Vienna, which include Iran as well as Britain, China, France, Germany and Russia directly, and indirectly the United States, resumed in late November with the aim of restoring the 2015 agreement.
This agreement offered easing of sanctions on Tehran in exchange for curbing its nuclear program, but the United States unilaterally withdrew in 2018 under former President Donald Trump and re-imposed heavy economic sanctions, prompting Iran to start backing its commitments.

A US State Department spokesman told French news agency FRANCE 24 that "significant progress has been made in the past week. If Iran takes action seriously, we can and should reach an understanding on a reciprocal return to full implementation of the JCPOA within days."
But "anything beyond that will put the possibility of returning to the deal at serious risk," he added.
Experts believe that Iran is only a few weeks away from producing fissile material for building nuclear weapons - even if a few more complicated steps will be required to create a real bomb.
President Joe Biden has said he is ready to return to the deal and ease some of the US sanctions, provided Tehran renews its commitments under the agreement.
France warned Iran on Wednesday that it was running out of time to sign a new agreement.
Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said it was a "matter of days," adding that a major crisis would prevail if there was no agreement.
Yesterday, however, Iran's chief negotiator Ali Bagiri said they were "closer than ever to an agreement."
He called on the other parties to be "realistic" and make "serious decisions".
Tehran has also called on the US Congress to say that Washington will commit if an agreement is reached in Vienna.
The Iranian authorities said in 2018 that they wanted a "guarantee" that the agreement would be implemented, as the potential for political turnover in the US countries questioned it again.
