The Ministry of Defense of Mali announced that eight soldiers were killed and 14 others were wounded in clashes with militants in the northeast of the country.
Reuters quoted the ministry as saying, "Gunmen attacked a military unit last night, but the army, with the support of the Air Force, repelled the attack, killing 57 of them, while the clashes between the two sides killed 8 soldiers and wounded 14 others."
The attack comes as the military junta ruling Mali demanded that France withdraw its forces from the region "without delay".
