It was a devastating accident: several families lost the roof over their heads in the major fire in the summer.

Now it is clear what will happen to the house.

Wolfratshausen – It was a misfortune the likes of which the Wolfratshausen building cooperative has never experienced in the more than 70 years of its existence: in the summer of last year, an apartment building on the street at the edge of the forest caught fire.

Four families lost their homes.

The fire brigade estimated the damage shortly after the fire at around half a million euros.

Britta Wurm, board member of the building cooperative that owns the building, says: “The estimate was certainly not overstated.

The damage may even be a little more than this sum.” The insurance company has not yet settled the final accounts.

It is now clear what will happen next with the building.

The four apartments are uninhabitable to this day.

According to Wurm, an examination revealed that "renovation is no longer economical".

The building cooperative would like to demolish the house - including four apartments that were spared the fire - and replace it with a new building.

The complete demolition is unavoidable: "Structurally, it is not possible to get the four undamaged apartments and replace the uninhabitable ones." The damage caused by the fire in the summer was too great.

Instead of the previous eight parties, 24 parties will find a home at the edge of the forest.

"We are trying to make a further contribution to counteracting the settlement pressure," emphasizes Wurm.

The demand for affordable housing is unbroken, "the city can urgently need these additional apartments".

Some interested parties who would contact the building cooperative for apartments "have been looking for years - and they just can't find anything".

Construction work is scheduled to begin this summer.

First the cooperative completes its work on Blombergstraße in Farchet, then it should probably start in June at the edge of the forest.

Two construction sites will then run in parallel.

In the vicinity of the fire house, a second building of the building cooperative is being replaced.

"It's no longer in a good condition - a renovation is no longer an option," says Wurm.

The measure could cost around 7.5 million euros, plus the investment on the site of the fire house.

"Prices keep going up," Wurm points out.

The estimate from last year could already be out of date due to inflation.
