Previously investigated on suspicion of childhood trafficking
Following Epstein's suicide in a Manhattan prison in August 2019, Brunel hid from authorities and was later arrested by French police.
He has also been investigated in the past on suspicion of trafficking in girls, including girls up to the age of 12, according to French media.
Brunel has worked as a modeling agent in Paris since the late 1970s and got to know Epstein through his girlfriend and ex-partner, Glein Maxwell, the daughter of British media mogul Robert Maxwell.
Prison authorities in France said "there was no breach" in security at the jail, and an investigation was opened into the circumstances of the death.
