One person was killed and ten others missing after a ferry caught fire on the island of Corfu off the northwest coast of Greece.

Coast Guard spokesman Nikos Alexio said that the Italian Euroferry Olympia, which was carrying more than 290 passengers and crew members, 153 trucks and 32 cars, caught fire three hours after leaving the port of Igoumenitsa in northwestern Greece, killing one person, while 10 people are still alive. Others are missing.

He explained that the ferry was heading to the Italian city of Brindisi and that the fire forced the coast guard to evacuate about 280 people to the nearby island of Corfu.

In turn, the Italian-based company that operates the ferry said: The fire broke out in a place where cars were parked, and the Greek public prosecutor in Corfu has ordered investigations into the causes of the fire.
