Opinion | Israeli weapons are not always in good hands Israel today

2022-02-20T23:04:04.490Z

According to a recent poll, 64% oppose the sale of weapons that could be used to violate human rights • This is common sense as well as an expression of an ongoing Jewish tradition, but for decision makers it does not move

In a summary report for 2021, the Ministry of Defense states that during the year, about 23,300 applications for licenses to export weapons and security equipment to about 190 countries were processed (about one-fifth of the applications were canceled or rejected). Arms exports Israel's defense exports total about ten billion dollars, almost a tenth of all general exports.Israel is also the only one, along with Russia, among the ten largest arms exporters in the world, without restrictive legislation on arms exports to countries with serious human rights violations.

What is the result of this lack of restriction?

And what is really being done with Israeli weapons?

The genocide in South Sudan was committed, among other things, using Israeli Galilee rifles.

In the following years, Israeli weapons were also used in massacres and repression in the country.

Israel sells military weapons and equipment to Myanmar, despite the 2017 Rohingya massacre and persecution.

In 2018, Philippine President Duterte - accused of killing thousands of civilians and political rivals - called for "there is only one country to buy military equipment and weapons from - Israel."

This is the short list.

Israel also sells weapons to Cameroon, Azerbaijan, Sri Lanka and many others and is dubious, such that most Western countries refuse to sell them for precisely these reasons.

When asked, as in a recent survey by the Outline Institute, we completely mark the order of conscience.

64 percent of Israelis oppose the sale of weapons and equipment that could be used to violate human rights.

Only 12 percent of us supported the sale.

But public opinion does not move the decision-makers who allow this horror.

This is common sense, according to which Israeli weapons are not supposed to be used for protection in the hands of murderers, but also in an ongoing Jewish tradition.

From the responsibility taken by Abraham, the father of many Gentiles, for Sodom and Gomorrah sinning against collective punishment, and for the prisoners of war of the four kings in five.

Abraham released the prisoners of war and refused to receive retribution.

Rabbi Moshe Kalfon HaCohen, the Chief Rabbi of Djerba, has developed a vision of global responsibility for human dignity and freedom.

From Djerba in the 1920s, he delivered a famous sermon in which he called for the establishment of a world organization and an international court in Jerusalem.

The goal was to ensure the safety and well-being of all human beings in the world.

This vision was a profound expression of the perception that the Torah of Israel is not aimed solely at the redemption of Israel, but carries a message of peace for all mankind.

This coming Saturday, the "Vikhal" affair, the struggle to restrict the sale of weapons in dozens of synagogues throughout Israel, led by YNSHOF (Association for Transparency and Control of Arms Exports), will be mentioned.
