Opinion | Nasrallah's Threats to Israel: Attempt to Stay Relevant | Israel today

2022-02-20T23:03:26.077Z

Nasrallah "on knives" with Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states demanding the disarmament of Hezbollah as a condition for improving relations with Lebanon

At every opportunity, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah makes threats and ridicule against Israel.

The last opportunity was a few days ago, on the 30th anniversary of the assassination of his predecessor, Abbas Mousavi, by Israel.

In a provocative speech, Nasrallah threatened that his organization's ability to make the thousands of missiles in its possession accurate, that is to say, hit any target in Israel accurately.

Nasrallah knows that the realization of his threat is a red line for Israel and will provoke a disproportionate response.

And yet he is threatening.

In recent days, he has also boasted of launching a UAV that flew 40 minutes in the skies of Israel, and returned safely to its base. But it seems that Nasrallah, more than his desire to demonstrate power, is actually fighting for his survival. In Lebanon, in the intra-Lebanese arena, voices opposing him and the influence of his Iranian patron are growing. Hezbollah had seven dead, but Nasrallah contained it and so far has not responded.

Nasrallah was forced to soften his public opposition to efforts to demarcate the maritime border between Lebanon and Israel.

He contented himself with clarifying that the contacts between the parties would not lead to the normalization of relations with Israel, because he did not recognize it.

The new electoral law allows a quarter of a million Lebanese living abroad to take part in the general elections scheduled for May. President Aoun is moving away from him ahead of the presidential election in a few months' time, hoping to persuade the Christian camp to crown his son-in-law, Jubran Basil, as his successor.

In the Middle East arena, Nasrallah is "on knives" with Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states, demanding the disarmament of Hezbollah as a condition for improving relations with Lebanon.

Iran's financial support is not the same as it was yesterday, and it is waiting for an improvement in the situation when Tehran reaches a nuclear agreement.

More and more countries around the world are declaring Hezbollah a terrorist organization, the Americans are not hesitant to impose sanctions on its people, and it itself hints that an armed struggle between Israel and Iran will not automatically oblige it to join.

All these signs point to Nasrallah's declining status.

Thirty years after Mousavi's assassination, the Hezbollah leader is still facing checkpoints that prevent him from completing his dream of taking over Lebanon.

To him, provocation in Israel is a refuge that leaves him present.

Therefore, his threats against Israel are efforts to remain relevant in the face of processes in the Lebanese reality, which work against him.
